The Gifted

Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy now offers a gifted focus in its Advanced Teaching Program to help educators meet the unique needs of academically talented students
Advanced Teaching: The Gifted expands educators' ability to address diverse academic needs, especially those of gifted students.
Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy now offers a gifted focus in its Advanced Teaching Program to help educators meet the unique needs of academically talented students. Advanced Teaching: The Gifted is designed so that certifed teachers and administrators can investigate approaches to curriculum planning and pedagogy that will create a challenging learning environment for all students.

The program provides opportunities for experienced educators to deepen and extend their professional knowledge through study, dialogue and inquiry at a top-ranked graduate school of education.

One of the hallmarks of the program is that participants gain practical experience with gifted and talented students through the nationally recognized Center for Talent Development on Northwestern's Evanston campus. The center serves gifted children and their families through educational programs and services.

Experienced educators and researchers in the field of gifted education serve on the faculty for Advanced Teaching: The Gifted. In addition, class sizes are small, and required core courses are scheduled to accommodate working educators. Classes are offered on Saturdays, in the evenings, and during the summer.

Throughout the program, special attention is given to gifted education, intelligence, creativity, academic challenge and differentiation. The program expands educators' ability to address diverse academic needs, especially those of gifted students. Differentiation classes address how to meet a range of abilities in the general classroom. Courses are aligned with the Illinois Association for Gifted Children's Professional Teaching Standards for Teachers of Gifted/Talented Learners.

Advanced Teaching: The Gifted is offered in two options: a master of science in education (MSEd) degree or an advanced teaching certificate. Either way, the curriculum emphasizes differentiation, academic challenge, gifted education, intelligence and creatifivy. Courses meet the requirements of the Illinois Association for Gifted Children's Professional Teaching Standards for Teachers of Gifted/Talented Learners.
