Early Academic Skills, Not Behavior, Best Predict School Success
A large-scale educational study led by SESP professor Greg Duncan finds that children who enter kindergarten with basic mathematics and reading skills are the most likely to experience later academic success, whether or not they have socioemotional problems

Center for Talent Development Starts New Program for Low-Income Students
A new project of SESP’s Center for Talent Development will provide enrichment and support to help gifted low- and moderate-income students reach their potential. Project BLAST targets students and their families in four Chicago-area school districts.

The William T. Grant Foundation awarded major research grants to SESP went to SESP professors Greg Duncan, Barton Hirsch and Larry Hedges for their research projects on how social settings affect youth.

Dean Peterson’s Essay on ‘Nurturing Untapped Talent’ Appears in Education Week
As a member of the Education Deans Alliance, Dean Penelope Peterson presents an essay in the October 17 issue of Education Week about the Project Excite program, intended to help close the achievement gap in Evanston schools. Dean Peterson has recently been named to the Adler Planetarium Board of Trustees.

Robert Gundlach (MS72) Named Northwestern’s Interim Athletic Director
Robert Gundlach was named Northwestern's interim director of Athletics. Gundlach, who received his PhD from Northwestern in 1977, is founding director of Northwestern’s Writing Program and Northwestern's faculty Athletics representative to the NCAA.
