McAdams Wins Award for Research on Aging

An innovative perspective on personality and aging has earned SESP human development professor Dan McAdams an award from the Gerontological Society of America. McAdams received the Society's Richard Kalish Innovative Publication Award recognizing “insightful and innovative publications on aging and life course development."

McAdams co-authored the award-winning article “Personality Reconsidered: A New Agenda for Aging Research” with Karen Hooker, Oregon State University professor of human development and family science. The article appeared in the Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences in 2003.

The article presents a more comprehensive view of the relationship of personality to aging than has been advanced in the past. It encourages researchers on aging to consider not only traits but also life stories, goals and the development of these aspects of personality in adulthood.

McAdams and Hooker received their Kalish Awards at the Gerontological Society's annual conference on November 20 in Orlando, Florida. The Society is the nation's oldest and largest professional organization devoted to the scientific study of aging. Members include more than 5,000 researchers, educators, practitioners, and policy makers in the field.
