Internships

internships

Internships helps students in the Higher Education Administration and Policy Program gain valuable professional experience. Students new to higher education administration can try out different areas of higher education and enhance employment credentials. The internship also helps students connect what they learn in the classroom to the real world. Our Chicago-area location allows us to offer high-quality internships at a wide variety of institutions and organizations.

Students are required to complete at least one credit-bearing internship for a minimum of 200 hours. Many students chose a longer, more in-depth internship experience or have more than one to gain experience in multiple areas of higher education administration. Most internships are paid, either through federal funding or by the employer's department or institution. Some internships also include free housing and board, such as placements in Residential Life.

Students already working full-time in higher education or who have had significant experience may waive their internship requirement in favor of taking another elective course. Or they can complete the internship to gain experience in a different area.

Internship Placement

The MS in Higher Education Administration and Policy Program offers exceptional placement assistance for all types of internships to match students to internships that meet both their academic and financial needs. Admitted students consult with an internship adviser about their educational and professional interests and financial needs. The internship adviser arranges interviews and coordinates a placement based on a student’s interests and the internship supervisor’s needs. Internship placements are made throughout the year, although applicants who meet the early application deadline in January receive the first consideration. Internships may be at Northwestern or at many other institutions and organizations in the Chicago area.
