MSHE at Northwestern's PossePlus Retreat

Posse Scholars

Each year, The Posse Foundation hosts a PossePlus Retreat where the Posse Scholars and community members come together to have an open dialogue surrounding a particular social topic.

PossePlus scholars are “Posses” of 10-12 diverse student leaders from public high schools around the country. These teams complete an intensive eight-month college preparation program for enrollment at highly selective colleges and universities where they can use their diverse perspective and experiences to become leaders on colleges campuses and advocate for social change.

This year, two current MS in Higher Education Administration and Policy (MSHE) students, Jamie Jeune and Eric Hetland, attended the PossePlus Retreat for the Northwestern PosseScholars. Jamie Jeune became interested in the retreat because she wanted to connect with the larger Northwestern community and hear different thoughts and opinions surrounding current events in American society today. Her favorite part of the experience was the opportunity to build relationships and "get to know faculty, administrators and students that [she] probably would not have met otherwise."

Eric Hetland became interested in the retreat based on his interest and passion for supporting students from under-resourced backgrounds, including those who are first generation college students. Hetland’s favorite part of the retreat was how "vulnerable and forthcoming the students were with the challenges they face on campus and how refreshing it was to share what was really going on in their lives.” Another takeaway for Hetland was that all students "need somebody in their corner, and so it is up to us to make sure they know what authentic allyship can look like from staff/administration." Hetland thinks all higher education professionals should consider attending in future years.
