One important expectation of Northwestern University’s Higher Education Administration and Policy Program is that all of our graduates will have significant field experience in higher education. Students are therefore required to complete a credit-bearing internship of at least 200 hours, or approximately 20 hours per week for 10 weeks. Students who are already working full-time in higher education or who have had significant experience in the field may choose to waive their internship requirement in favor of taking another elective course. By integrating classroom and experiential learning, students are challenged to apply theoretical knowledge to inform professional practice and cultivate questions from practice to illuminate and validate theory. Internships enhance the overall academic and professional preparation and employment credentials of graduates and are an important aspect of students’ career development. |
