Catherine Berardi, Adam Cebulski and Joan Trimuel Win Northwestern Service Awards
Higher Education students Adam Cebulski and Catherine Berardi, along with alumna Joan Trimuel (MS04), were recognized with Northwestern University Service Excellence Awards for 2008. Berardi is a financial administrator for WCAS, Cebulski works for McCormick Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences, and Trimuel is business systems project manager in the Office of Financial Operations.

Vernicia Elie to Make Presentation at Harvard Conference

Higher Education Administration and Policy student Vernicia Elie will be a participant in a roundtable at the Harvard School of Education 2009 Student Research Conference on March 13 at Harvard University. The conference theme is "Education as an Agent of Change," and her presentation is "The Neo-Traditional Student: Financial Implications for Small Private Institutions in the Midwest Region."

Katy Weseman Presents to Higher Education Consortium
In conjunction with her summer 2008 internship at the University of California Riverside LGBT Resource Center, student Katy Weseman made a presentation entitled "Living, Learning, and Activism" to the Consortium of Higher Education Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Professionals at their annual meeting, January 28-February 1, 2009.

Andrea Abel Invited to Serve on Next Generation Leadership Advisory Council
On the recommendation of Henry Bienen, Northwestern University’s president, Andrea Abel (MS08) has been invited to serve on the Chicago 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Committee's Next Generation Leadership Advisory Council. “I am an avid supporter of the Olympic movement, and I absolutely love the city of Chicago,” Abel says. “I am very excited to play a part in bringing the games to Chicago in 2016!”

Katie Eimers Shares Secrets of Success in Environmental Sustainability
Katie Eimers (MS08) will present “Sustaining Campus Sustainability: Factors Leading to the Success of Environmental Sustainability Initiatives in Higher Education” at the biennial conference of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.

Alum's Chronicle Commentary Addresses Students' On-the-Job Learning
Jonathan Lewis (MS07) comments in Chronicle of Higher Education on how college students can learn from campus work, a subject he explored in his master's thesis.

U.S. Student Achievers Program Features Alison Segal's Research
Alison Segal (MS08) conducted her master’s project research on the college outcomes of U.S. Student Achievers Program (USAP) participants. A description of her project is now featured on the USAP web site.

John Wilkin Receives Significant Promotion following Graduation
John Wilkin (MS08) is now Assistant Vice President for Budget Management at Columbia College Chicago. Wilkin manages the budget for human resources and five key areas under the provost as well.

Kara Godwin to Study with Philip Altbach in Boston College PhD Program

Kara Godwin (MS05) has been accepted to the doctoral program in Higher Education Administration at Boston College, where she will work and study under renowned author Philip G. Altbach, director of the Center for International Higher Education.

Earth Week 2008 Features “Sustainability Brown Bag” with Katie Eimers
Higher Education Administration and Policy student Katie Eimers teamed up with Trelana Daniel, area coordinator of University Residence Life, to present a Sustainability Brown Bag as part of Northwestern University’s Earth Week events. Eimers and Daniel shared practical ideas about how to reduce students’ carbon footprints and advance the University’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Shyanmei Wang Presents at International Educators Conference
Current student Shyanmei Wang presented her master’s research project, “The Transfer of Training of International Teaching Assistant Training,” at the 2008 Wisconsin Association of International Educators Conference. Wang is a program assistant with the Searle Center for Teaching Excellence.

Aisha Davis Volunteers in Tanzania
Aisha Davis (MS05) recently spent two months as a volunteer with Cross-Cultural Solutions, working toward women’s empowerment initiatives in Bagamoyo, Tanzania. Davis took a leave from her post as associate director for student services and multicultural affairs with the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University to volunteer.

David Musser Presents at DePaul University’s Academic Freedom Conference
Current Higher Education Administration and Policy student David Musser presented “Contingent Freedom: Academic Freedom and the Problem of Adjunct Faculty” at DePaul University’s Academic Freedom Conference in February. The idea for his presentation came from a paper he wrote for History and Philosophy of Higher Education with Eugene Lowe.

Council for Exceptional Children appoints Andrea Abel to Student Committee
Higher Education Administration and Policy student Andrea Abel was selected to the 2008 Student Committee for the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). As part of her role, Abel helped plan the CEC’s 2008 Annual Convention in Boston, Massachusetts and also contributed an article called “International Minute” to the CEC’s Inquire & Inspire student newsletter.

Jonathan Lewis Co-Authors Article for The Bulletin
In the first of several publications resulting from his master’s research project, Jonathan Lewis (MS07) co-authored “Research and Practice: Connecting Student Employment and Learning” for the January 2008 edition of The Bulletin, the magazine of the Association of College Unions International.

Dara Freiberg Makes Career Move from Yale to Emory University
Dara Freiberg (MS04) is now director of development with Goizueta Business School at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Freiberg moved to Atlanta from Connecticut, where she served as deputy director of annual giving with Yale College at Yale University.
