Application for Admission for 2009–10 Academic Year
 

Guidelines for MPES Applications and Review Procedures

Application materials are due February 25, 2009. Applicants will submit via e-mail to Hannah Wallerstein (hwallerstein@gmail.com), the MPES program administrative assistant.

Applicants must be first-year students in good standing in their graduate program. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or resident aliens. Students of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

1. APPLICATION PROCESS
— Each applicant should submit the following:
  • One- to two-page statement (12-point font, double-spaced) that outlines the applicant’s research interest(s) in education
  • Resume, including GRE scores and any awards received
  • One letter of reference from a faculty member in the applicant’s PhD program that speaks to the applicant's academic promise and the centrality of education to the applicant’s research interests

2. REVIEW PROCESS
  • Applications are reviewed by the MPES steering committee, which includes the following professors:
                  Economics: Sergio Urzua  
                  Human Development and Social Policy: Lindsay Chase-Lansdale  
                  Learning Sciences: David Rapp
                  Psychology: David Uttal
                  Sociology: Thomas Cook
                  Statistics:  Larry Hedges

3. REVIEW CRITERIA
  • Centrality of education to the applicant's program of research.
  • Applicant scholarly promise. The program seeks to recruit and fund the most academically able students in the participating PhD program
