Matriculated vs. Non-matriculated Status
In order to successfully complete the Master of Science in Education program, applicants must become "matriculated" students. However, it is also possible to begin taking courses (up to four) as a non-matriculated student.Applicants applying as non-matriculated, "special" students may take up to four courses before being asked to apply as "regular," matriculated students. Non-matriculated status is ideal for people who are unsure of their future goals.
Non-matriculated students will need to complete a matriculated student application in order to be considered for matriculated status. Admission as a non-matriculated student does not guarantee admission into the program as a matriculated student.

Advanced Teaching Certificate Application - For Advanced Teaching Certificate applicants only. All other applicants, including those interested in the 15-course Master of Science in Education degree in Advanced Teaching, should submit either the matriculated or non-matriculated student application listed above.
Teacher Certification Information
Elementary and Secondary Teaching applicants (excluding NU-TEACH graduates) must take and pass the Illinois Basic Skills Test before being formally admitted to the MSEd program as matriculated (degree-seeking) students. An application that does not include a passing score report for the Basic Skills Test will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed by our admissions committee. Applicants who are not Illinois residents and who are unable to take the Basic Skills Test prior to the application deadline may instead submit a proof of registration to take the test upon relocation to Illinois. In such an instance, the latest possible date you may take the Basic Skills Test is during the first month during which you plan to be enrolled as a matriculated student at Northwestern.
