Student Capstones
MSLOC Capstone Overview
MSLOC Capstone Process
Each student selects a Capstone Project with the help of a Capstone advisor and research methods instructor, with final approval from the MSLOC program director. The project may concentrate on one of the three focus areas: learning and performance, knowledge management or strategic change; and, it should reflect the interdependence of the three areas with each other and with the strategy and context of the organization(s) of focus.
The student will meet with the Capstone cohort, with his/her Capstone advisor and in small “Capstone advising team” groups throughout the Capstone experience. The expected deliverables for Capstone Projects include the following:
Preparation for the MSLOC Capstone
The first quarter of the Capstone Project must begin with a Research Methods course, which is offered once each year in the spring quarter.
The Research Methods class approach is to act as if you are a novice researcher, searching for opportunities to build your research skills and find ways to apply these skills to future design and consulting engagements. As such, the course is about developing research competencies rather than about “how to complete my Capstone Project.”
Students will receive a grade for the Research Methods course based upon their course work and satisfactory completion of their Capstone proposals. Students may not enroll in Capstone II until they have completed the requirements of the Research Methods course.

MSLOC Capstone Overview
![]() |
The MSLOC Capstone Project is designed to extend through at least three quarters near the end of each degree student’s program and is open only to MSLOC degree candidates. Although the Capstone Project may be more application-oriented than a traditional master’s thesis, MSLOC students should regard this as their culminating take-away from the MSLOC program. The Capstone provides an opportunity for each student, individually, to complete a research project or to design and evaluate an intervention that incorporates the use of research methods, involves multiple stages, and enables students to show the results of their work. |
