Innovator Series Features Design Expert February 21

With talk of the MFA becoming the new MBA and publications such as Business Week touting the power of design, how can leaders who are not designers harness the power of design to bring about change? As part of the Learning and Organizational Change program's Innovator Series, Marcia Lausen will give a presentation on February 21, using visual case studies to demonstrate how design is an integral part of change - and how you can begin to think like a designer.

Marcia Lausen is founder of the Chicago office of Studio/lab and Director of the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).

Lausen's presentation, called "Designing Change," will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on February 21 at Baldwin Auditorium, Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center, 303 E. Superior on the Chicago campus. A reception will follow. The cost is $10, and anyone wishing to attend should register by February 10 through the link at http://www.sesp.northwestern.edu/loc/community/announcements.

Studio/lab is an interdisciplinary studio that provides identity, information and experience design consulting services to incite business and social change. Clients include Alzheimer's Association, Design for Democracy, Mattel, Morningstar, Motorola, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Rand McNally, Target and Whirlpool.

At UIC, Marcia provides leadership for BFA and MFA programs in graphic design, industrial design, electronic visualization, moving image, photography and studio arts. As a professor in the graphic design department, Lausen also teaches graduate and undergraduate students preparing for professional careers in design education, research and practice.

Lausen is an outspoken advocate for the value of design in corporate, consumer and government communications. She serves on the national board of AIGA and initiated the election design program of Design for Democracy, a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve the quality and clarity of government communications. Lausen received her MFA in graphic design from Yale University in 1985. She was named a Fast Company Master of Design in 2004.
