SESP Students Win Softball Honors

When Northwestern University's softball team won the Big Ten regular-season championship last weekend, six of the 18 team members were students in the School of Education and Social Policy, and three SESP students received special honors.

In All-Big Ten selections, junior Eileen Canney was named Pitcher of the Year, and freshman Tammy Williams was named Freshman of the Year.

In addition, senior Sheila McCorkle, a social policy major, was selected as Northwestern's Sportsmanship honoree for her on-the-field leadership and her off-the-field efforts in developing policies and programs to enhance the lives and experiences of Northwestern student-athletes.

Canney became the first Northwestern pitcher to win the Big Ten's Pitcher of the Year award. Ending the regular season with a 20-5 record, she earned the Big Ten ERA title with a 0.50 mark. She also led the league in strikeouts per seven innings (11.3).

Williams became the fifth Northwestern player to be named Freshman of the Year. She scored a conference best of 20 runs, eight homeruns in the Big Ten. She also ranked second in the league in RBIs (23) and slugging percentage (.791). In 2004, Canney was recognized as Freshman of the Year.

The other three SESP players on Northwestern's first Big Ten championship team since 1987 are Ashley Crane, Jessica Miller and Darcy Sengewald.
