Day after day, undergraduates in SESP's Summer Field Studies program serve in positions working for civic, public interest, health and educational organizations in San Francisco and Washington, D.C. For the program's 10-year anniversary, the mayor of San Francisco proclaimed July 10 Northwestern University Field Study Day.
On that day the mayor's office presented professor Dan Lewis, head of the San Francisco program, with a certificate in appreciation of the program's contributions to the city. Through the nine-week program, students pursue internships and gain research experience as they provide community service.
Lewis says, "It is gratifying to have the mayor recognize the work Northwestern has been doing in the city. It shows that a solid learning experience can have a civic payoff."
