HDSP Plans October Reunion for 25th Anniversary

In celebration of its 25th year, the Human Development and Social Policy (HDSP) program will hold a reunion on October 20 in Evanston. A featured event will be the Bernice L. Neugarten Lecture, followed by a reception and dinner. Other activities include panel discussions with alumni on important current issues.

HDSP Plans October Reunion for 25th Anniversary

At 3 p.m. on October 20, Phyllis Moen, who holds the McKnight Presidential Chair in Sociology at the University of Minnesota, and Richard Settersten Jr. (PhD92), professor of sociology at Oregon State University, will be the featured speakers at the third annual Neugarten Lecture, "Cracks in the American Dream? Rethinking Careers in the 21st Century." HDSP alumnus Rick Settersten, who is professor of human development and family studies at Oregon State University, will deliver a commentary for the talk, and Fay Cook will serve as moderator.

Because the HDSP reunion coincides with Northwestern's Reunion Weekend, the Neugarten Lecture will attract other Northwestern alumni as part of the University's popular Alumni College Series, Classes Without Quizzes.

The Neugarten Lecture will be followed by a reception in honor of the HDSP program at 4:30. Dinner for HDSP alums and their guests, along with current HDSP students and faculty, will take place Friday evening at the Allen Center on campus.

The day will begin in Annenberg Hall at 9 a.m. with a continental breakfast and opening remarks by HDSP professor Dan McAdams. A panel session on "Contemporary Research in Human Development and Social Policy" will feature HDSP alums Stephanie DeLuca, Debbie Gold and Ruby Mendenhall, with Bart Hirsch as moderator. After lunch, a second panel session, "Life Pathways and HDSP: Past, Present, and Future," will feature HDSP alums Ed de St. Aubin, Susan Lloyd, Bob Murphy and others; McAdams will moderate.

Hotel rooms may be booked online within the Northwestern alumni block, which offers special rates, at www.alumni.northwestern.edu/reunions/fall2006/index.html (click on the word hotel). This site also lists other University-wide events being planned for this weekend as well as discount information from American Airlines (click on the word travel). "The HDSP 25th celebration should be a great opportunity to re-connect to SESP and HDSP and to catch up with faculty and friends," says McAdams. Alumni interested in information about the HDSP reunion should contact Dan McAdams at dmca@northwestern.edu or Mary Lou Manning at mmanning@northwestern.edu. To be included in the 25th reunion book, alumni may complete a form online at www.sesp.northwestern.edu/hdsp/25anniv.

The Human Development and Social Policy (HDSP) doctoral program was founded in 1981 under the leadership of Dr. Bernice Neugarten. The program prepares students to conduct research to understand and to attack the human problems that pose the greatest challenges to society in the 21st century.
