CTD Offers Seminar on Vocabulary Development

The Center for Talent Development will host a one-day seminar on September 15 featuring Michael Clay Thompson, noted author, consultant and educator of gifted children, on the topic of vocabulary instruction. The workshop, which will last from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is intended for classroom teachers, gifted program coordinators and anyone interested in learning about vocabulary development for students.

Precocious language development is characteristic of most gifted children. However, understanding of Latin- and Greek-based word stems, cannot be gained through reading alone and must be taught as a program of vocabulary instruction, according to Thompson, who is an authority on the English language.

The deadline for registering for the seminar, which costs $100 per person and includes lunch, is September 7. Information about registration is available through the Center for Talent Development's web site at http://www.ctd.northwestern.edu/resources/fallconference07.htm and also available by calling 847/491-3782.

The nationally recognized Center for Talent Development, which is part of the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University, serves more than 6,000 gifted learners from pre-K through high school annually. Since 1981, the Center for Talent Development has offered testing, support, and programs for gifted students and their families.
