Is it true that Social Security will go bankrupt in 2041? Are young adults more likely to believe in UFOs than to think they will get Social Security? Cook's presentation will examine what we know about Social Security's problems, the politics surrounding the debate and the policies being proposed.
A Day with Northwestern, a seminar day for alumni and the general public, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, at Norris University Center. The daylong event features 14 lectures by prominent Northwestern faculty and alumni on topics ranging from the intersection of art and chemistry to the future of news in the digital age.
Keynote speakers are former U.S. Senator George McGovern and author Richard Longworth, senior fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. McGovern, who currently acts as the United Nations global ambassador on hunger, recently co-authored Out of Iraq: A Practical Plan for Withdrawal Now. Longworth's new book, Caught in the Middle, describes the impact of globalism on the Midwest. Other seminar talks include "Powering the Future with Solar Energy" by chemistry professor Michael Wasielawski, "The Future of News in the Digital Age" by Medill professor Rich Gordon and "What Can We Do About the Diabetes Epidemic" by Feinberg School of Medicine professor Boyd Metzger.
Fees for A Day with Northwestern 2008 are $55 for a full day with lunch for those who register by March 22, $65 for a full day with lunch for those who register after March 22, $45 for a half day and $20 for a single session. Young alumni from graduation years 1997-2007 are eligible for discounted fees of $40 (with lunch) or $20 (without lunch). Northwestern students are eligible for a reduced rate of $10 with lunch or $5 without lunch.
