Tiffany Simons Chan Becomes First Kinship Fellow

Tiffany Simons Chan, a doctoral student in the Learning Sciences program, is the first recipient of the Kinship Environmental Education Fellowship. Jim and Mary Nelson (BS67) established the scholarship in 2008 to advance education in the area of environmental science.

In her research, Simons Chan is seeking to understand how to support individuals working toward building environmental sustainability. She is examining the life stories of environmental leaders. "By studying leaders who are actively engaged with building a sustainable future for the planet, I have learned a great deal about how they deal with the struggles of this work and the supports that keep them going in their commitment," she says.

"Our generation is facing unprecedented environmental challenges related to climate, energy and the stability of our food system," Simons Chan asserts. "I hope that my research will help inform efforts to engage the public in finding meaningful ways to generate solutions to these environmental problems."
