Morton Schapiro, who is a new faculty member at the School of Education and Social Policy, will be inaugurated as president of Northwestern University on Friday, October 9. Two academic symposia that day will honor the occasion of his inauguration as the 16th president of the University.
Both symposia feature prestigious panelists, including the 9 a.m. panel on "The Economics of Higher Education" with President Schapiro as moderator. Panelists include William Bowen, president emeritus of the Mellon Foundation; Catherine Bond Hill, president and professor of economics, Vassar College; Michael McPherson, president of the Spencer Foundation; and Burton Weisbrod, the John Evans Professor of economics and a faculty fellow at the Institute for Policy Research.
Another symposium at 10:30 a.m. features Thomas Friedman and will be moderated by Kelly O'Donnell (BS87), a Capitol Hill correspondent for the NBC television network who is an undergraduate alumna of the School of Education and Social Policy. This panel will examine the issues of energy and sustainability. Along with Friedman, panelists are Kimberly Gray, professor of civil and environmental engineering and of chemical and biological engineering; Mark Mills, founding partner of Digital Power Capital, a private equity firm focused on new technologies; and Mark Ratner, the Lawrence B. Dumas Distinguished University Professor of chemistry and co-director of the Initiative for Energy and Sustainability.
The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for 3 p.m. on October 9 on Deering Meadow on the Evanston campus. All members of the Northwestern University community are invited to Friday's ceremony and the reception that will follow.
Both symposiums are open to the entire Northwestern community and will be held in the Crown Sports Pavilion. The inauguration and the symposia also will be webcast live.
