Symposium Assesses State of Science Education Today
Jim SpillaneScience educators and policy makers have concerns about the quality of standards, assessments, teacher qualifications, curriculum and classroom teaching. SESP professor James Spillane will be the rapporteur at the Third Annual Lecture on Science and Technology on October 22 that will consider how policy, research and funding affect science learning.

"The State of Science Education: A Local and National Perspective" combines a lecture, panel discussion and question-and-answer session. The keynote speaker is Heidi Schweingruber, Deputy Director of the Board on Science Education for the National Research Council. The panel moderator is Ofer Malamud, assistant professor at the Harris School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago.

Panelists are as follows:

  • Jeanne Century, Director of Science Education and Research & Evaluation, Center for Elementary Mathematics and Science Education, University of Chicago
  • Michael Lach, K through 12 Officer, Office of Teaching and Learning, Chicago Public Schools
  • Gudelia Lopez, Senior Program Officer, The Chicago Community Trust

The presentation will begin at 5:45 p.m., with registration and a reception beforehand, beginning at 5 p.m. The event will take place on Northwestern University's Chicago campus at Hughes Auditorium, 303 East Superior Street. Sponsors of the symposium are the Center for Human Potential and Public Policy and the Chicago Council on Science and Technology.

James Spillane is the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Professor in Learning and Organizational Change at Northwestern University's School of Educational and Social Policy. His work explores the policy implementation process at the state, school district, school and classroom levels, focusing on intergovernmental relations and the school organization. He is a faculty associate at the Institute for Policy Research and (by courtesy) a professor of management and organizations at the Kellogg School of Management.
