Alumni Invited to SESP Reunion Weekend Events on October 26

Reunion Weekend

A dean’s reception in the new Student Affairs Office and a Classes Without Quizzes talk by SESP professor Kemi Jona are the SESP highlights of Reunion Weekend on October 26. Alumni are invited to attend.

SESP Reception
A reception hosted by SESP Dean Penelope Peterson at 4:30 p.m. will provide an “inside look” at the School and some of its latest work. The reception will take place in the newly created Student Affairs Office on the first floor of Annenberg Hall, a model learning space for students infused with cutting-edge technology.

At the reception, alumni will meet current students and mingle with fellow SESP graduates. Light refreshments will be served. Alumni who would like to attend may RSVP to Samantha at s-adler@northwestern.edu or 847/467-2073.

Classes Without Quizzes Talk
A talk by Jona and Teresa Woodruff of the Feinberg School of Medicine at 3:15 p.m. will describe how Northwestern medical research inspired an innovative science curriculum. The NUBIO curriculum for teaching biotechnology in high school is based on the groundbreaking work of Woodruff’s research team in the new field of oncofertility, which aims to protect the fertility of young cancer patients.

Woodruff and Jona’s talk is entitled “From Bench to Bedside to Classroom: How Oncofertility Research at Northwestern Helps Cancer Patients — and Inspires the Next Generation of Scientists.” This free Classes Without Quizzes session will be held at Norris Center, and alumni may register here through the Northwestern Alumni Association.

Jona is director of the Office of STEM Education Partnerships at the School of Education and Social Policy, which connects K-12 schools with Northwestern University’s cutting-edge science. OSEP assists schools through teacher professional development; creation of new science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs and technology; and capacity building.

These SESP events are part of a three-day schedule of Reunion Weekend activities that include tours, a tailgate, football game, career seminars and class parties. View the entire Reunion Weekend schedule here.
