Jim Spillane Addresses Three-College Leadership Conferences in Ireland

Jim Spillane

Professor James Spillane shared his expertise in organizational leadership when he addressed scholars in Ireland recently. At a leadership symposium organized by three universities, he spoke to higher education professionals, faculty members, graduate students and researchers.

First, Spillane addressed the topic of "Researching and Developing Organizational Leadership: The Entailments of a Distributed Perspective” at a 3U Partnership master class at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin on February 28. 3U is a partnership among three higher education institutions in Ireland — Dublin City University, National University of Ireland-Maynooth and the Royal College of Surgeons — that offers education and research opportunities.

The next day Spillane gave the keynote talk for the 3U leadership symposium on “Leadership and Trust: Challenges and Opportunities for Professional Practice” at National University of Ireland in Maynooth. He followed up with the theme of leadership at this symposium highlighting research into educational leadership that spans both teaching and health care sectors.

Spillane studies and writes on organizational leadership and change, conceptualizing organizational leadership as a distributed practice. An expert in school leadership and educational policy, he is the author of several books, including Distributed Leadership and Diagnosis and Design for School Improvement. Spillane’s work explores the policy implementation process at the state, school district, school and classroom levels.

At Northwestern University, Spillane is the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Professor in Learning and Organizational Change and the chair of the Human Development and Social Policy doctoral program at the School of Education and Social Policy. He is also a professor of Learning Sciences and a faculty associate at the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University.

Recently named the director of the Office of Global Initiatives at Northwestern’s School of Education and Social Policy, Spillane is leading the School’s efforts to develop a more global perspective. Global initiatives are a priority for the School to extend its resources and address critical issues worldwide.
