SESP Student Board Seeks Alumni Career Advice

As a way of helping undergraduates to gain career advice, the SESP Leadership and Programming Board is spearheading an initiative for students to develop relationships with alumni. The board of student volunteers advises the SESP Office of Student Affairs on programs and events.

As students look ahead to careers, the Professional Opportunities Committee of the SESP Board is helping them to network with alumni. After receiving input from nearly 400 alumni, the committee is creating a database of SESP alumni for students to consult as they seek information or guidance about fellowships, jobs and other postgraduate opportunities.

“Our vision is to cultivate a relationship between students and alumni from the minute students join the SESP community and aid in maintaining those relationships long after students leave Northwestern,” says senior Nicola Rhyan, Professional Opportunities Chair on the Board.

In addition, the Professional Opportunities Committee plans to start student dinners with alumni as well as a mentorship program for career guidance.

The Leadership and Programming Board is interested in hearing from alumni who would like to share information and advice with students. “We undergrads would love the opportunity to meet you and learn more about your career trajectory and passions,” Rhyan wrote to SESP alumni.

These activities will supplement the SESP Student Affairs career workshops with alumni speakers. This fall, students have attended workshops with social policy alumna Nicole Fredericks (BS12) and human development and psychological services alumna Beth Schneider (BS07), as well as a career event with alumni over Reunion Weekend.

The SESP Leadership and Programming Board began in 2013 as a new way to provide undergraduates with meaningful programs and events. The 12 students on the SESP Leadership and Programming Board advise the School of Education and Social Policy on planning student events and increasing student engagement.
