Title Two Open-Rank Professors in Learning Sciences
Description

The School of Education and Social Policy of Northwestern University seeks to recruit up to two tenure-track faculty at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor to contribute to research and teaching in the Learning Sciences Program. We are particularly interested in candidates who focus on designing and investigating innovations in the learning and teaching of science, mathematics, or technology, and who draw on multidisciplinary design approaches and research methodologies. Applicants from learning sciences, education, computer science, media studies, cognitive science, psychology, and other relevant disciplines are encouraged to apply. Teaching and advising responsibilities will include doctoral and masters students in Learning Sciences, as well as teaching courses in areas related to design, innovation, and learning in the school’s undergraduate or teacher preparation programs. Northwestern’s Learning Sciences program, first established in 1992, was the first graduate program in learning sciences, and has played a leadership role in innovations in graduate training and research in the field. The goal of research and development efforts of the Learning Sciences is to develop pedagogical, technological and social policy innovations aimed at improving education. The Learning Sciences Program is a highly collaborative environment. Preference will be given to candidates with interest and capacity for establishing a research program that produce synergies with existing faculty strengths while helping set new directions in the field of the learning sciences.

Title Associate or Full Professor in Social Policy and Human Development
Description

Northwestern University invites applications for a tenured faculty position to be held jointly between the Institute for Policy Research and the School of Education and Social Policy.  We seek a scholar with a research program in the study of social policies and with strong quantitative skills.  The successful candidate will have strong theoretical and empirical interests in some area of social policy such as education, poverty, social welfare/social insurance policy, health, or immigration and in how policies affect the lives of individuals or families.  Applicants should have an outstanding record of both scholarly publications and externally funded research.  To promote policy-relevant research activities, the Institute for Policy Research (IPR) portion of the appointment will carry one-half reduction in teaching responsibilities.  In addition to research, responsibilities will include teaching and advising doctoral and undergraduate students in the School of Education and Social Policy. Title Open Rank Faculty Position in Learning Sciences and Computer Science
Description

Northwestern's programs in Learning Science (LS) and Computer Science (CS) offer an open rank faculty position for a person to be jointly appointed in the LS program in the School of Education and Social Policy and the CS Program in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. We seek a scholar who designs novel learning technologies and studies the principled design and creation of learning technologies that can improve learning in fundamental ways.  We welcome applications from candidates with interests in exploring how new and pervasive computational technologies such as computer-based modeling, visualization, scaffolded tools, virtual reality, games, robotics, ubiquitous computing, computer fabrication, or social networking, enable powerful learning in schools and other settings. We are open to a wide range of approaches to scholarship within this general area.  An interest in computational thinking or computational literacy is desirable. Teaching and advising responsibilities will include doctoral and master students in Learning Sciences and Computer Science.

Title Professor in Social Disparities and Health
Description Northwestern University invites applications for an open rank position jointly held between Cells to Society: The Center on Social Disparities and Health at the Institute for Policy Research and one of the following departments: Anthropology, Psychology, or Sociology. Social and cultural contexts are critical determinants of physical and psychological health, and we seek a scholar with an active research program that integrates social, behavioral, and biological/biomedical perspectives to illuminate pathways linking social contexts and health, with implications for understanding socioeconomic and race/ethnic disparities. Applicants should have outstanding records of scholarly publication and externally-funded research, and be interested in applying their work to social policy issues. To promote policy-relevant research activities, the appointment carries a one-half reduction in teaching responsibilities. Candidates could specialize in one or more of the following fields: biodemography, population health, gene-environment interplay, biocultural or biopsychosocial perspectives on human development and health, psychobiology, and other related areas.

Title Tenure Track Faculty Position in Population and Health
Description

Northwestern University is seeking an experienced scholar in social epidemiology, population health or related fields, who has done extensive, theory-grounded work in demography, incorporating biological outcomes and covariates. The scholar will join the multidisciplinary faculty of Cells to Society (C2S): The Center on Social Disparities and Health at the Institute for Policy Research. C2S includes faculty in multiple departments across several of Northwestern’s schools, providing rich opportunities for collaboration. Applicants should demonstrate outstanding records of scholarly publication, teaching, and externally-funded research. The successful candidate will help to lead C2S as it matures to become a full population research center. This position will be jointly held across at least two schools: Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, School of Education and Social Policy, Feinberg School of Medicine. The following departments could be involved: Anthropology, Economics, Human Development and Social Policy, Preventive Medicine, Sociology, or Statistics.
