Fellowships

The Mary Lou & John Scott and Ruth J. Simmons Fellowships offer the following:

  • Fully paid tuition for NU-TEACH, Northwestern's 12-month Alternative Certification Program
  • A State of Illinois Initial Alternative Secondary or Elementary Teaching Certificate upon successful completion of the program
  • Eight units of credit upon completion of the program, which can be applied toward an MS degree in Education and Social Policy at Northwestern if accepted into the MS program
  • An opportunity to earn a full-time teacher's salary with benefits while teaching in the Chicago public schools this coming fall

Eligible Candidates

  • Hold at least a BA or BS degree from an accredited college or university as of June 15, 2010
  • Those interested in teaching at the secondary level have a major or at least a substantial concentration of courses in math, science, or computer science. Elementary candidates have a major in math, science, or one of the humanities.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Must pass certification tests administered by the Illinois State Board of Education

Obligation of Fellowships

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to public education
  • Successfully complete all of the requirements of the NU-TEACH program
  • Teach in Chicago for a minimum of two years
  • Deadline: March 1, 2010

Recipients will be notified in April. An orientation is planned for the beginning of June, and summer classes begin mid-June.
