Selected Presentations
Swindle, Mark; Rich, Matthew; Bienen, Leigh (April, 2008). From Murder to Social Justice: A Tale of Technology and Record Keeping Across Two Centuries. Early in the process of gathering historical and legal documents for the Florence Kelley web site, it became apparent that this companion site to Homicide in Chicago 1870-1930 - constructed around a single dataset of 14,000 police case records - would require a very different organizational scheme and interface to maximize ease of navigation and access to a collection of 50,000 documents from more than 300 libraries and archival sources. Our presentation will trace the collaborative and iterative process used to integrate high-performance full-text search capabilities based upon a structured, hierarchical Document Repository, bringing tens of thousands of 19th- and 20th century documents and photographs to 21st century readers through a multi-faceted and intuitive interactive experience. Evanston, IL.

Swindle, Mark and Webb, James Accreditation and Accountability: Digital Portfolios, Virtual Showrooms and a CMS . Annual Meeting, Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
This session describes the transformation of a homegrown educational content management system (CMS) into a comprehensive accreditation tool - built on open source architecture - linking courses, instructors, digital portfolios and a virtual showroom. We will demonstrate how this system streamlined a review by the Illinois State Board of Education of a masters-level teacher certification program at Northwestern University. Chicago, IL.

2008 The Life and Times of Florence Kelley in Chicago,
A companion site to Homicide in Chicago 1870-1930, this project resuscitates some 50,000 pages of archival records from a decade of Chicago's history that featured everything from the glories of the World Columbian Exposition to the despair wrought of 100,000 homeless men on the streets after the demise of the Fair and the Panic of 1893; and horrid working conditions for many of Chicago's men, women and children. Onto this stage Florence Kelley brought a fierce determination to apply the rule of law and the power of the pen, and her role as the first female factory inspector in the United States, to agitate for better living and working conditions. Three pivotal court cases finally culminated, in 1911 (Muller v. Oregon), in a decision upholding factory inspections and the ability of the courts to regulate the number of hours women could be demanded to work.
