Biography
David Renz is a Teaching Associate in the MSED Department and the Teacher Education program of the School of Education and Social Policy. He began as an instructor in Methods of Teaching Social Studies for SESP in 1994. In 1999, he became an instructor in the Student Teaching Seminars (Humanities), and Academic Advisor for the MSED and the Teacher Education programs in addition to his instruction for the Methods course. At that time he became an advisor for job placement for teaching candidates. From 1966-1999, Mr. Renz was a teacher of U.S. History, Government, Law in American Society, and World Cultures at Maine East High School in Park Ridge, IL. For the last 16 years of his tenure he was the Social Science Department Chair. He served as the President of the Chicago and Suburban Social Studies Supervisors during the 1980's.

Courses
MS_ED 459 Section 21 Analysis of teaching specific subject-matter areas, the development of learning experiences, and techniques specific to particular subjects; literature, research, and scholarly content of teaching methodology. Students choose the course appropriate to their area of certification. Course work in this sequence is related to issues explored in MS_ED 406 Research and Analysis in Teaching and Learning: Discussion and Question Development. This course is accompanied by a half-time, 10-week teaching practicum that includes observation and assumption of teaching and management dutiesin a public school setting. The MSEd program staff places students in schools; students are responsible for planning a schedule of daily activities with their classroom supervisor, according to University guidelines. The practicum is a prerequisite for the MS_ED 487-489 Student Teaching.
Teach Ed 379 Practicum: Math & Science Students complete a practicum that required a minimum of 10 hours per week for the whole quarter observing and assisting in a school approved by the director of undergraduate teacher education.  Concurrent registration in 341 and the applicable methods and teachniques course (354-59) required.  Prerequisites: 304 and passing score on the Illinois Basic Skills Test.
Teach Ed 388 Student Teaching: Humanities (4 units) This seminar and accompanying intership, which lasts the entire quarter, helps develop teaching methodologies through an intensive clinical experience and teaching under the supervision of master teachers in the teacher-training schools.  Increasingly sophisticated teaching responsibilities and, finally, primary responsiblity for teaching a group of a class.  Prerequistites: 341; 378 or 379; the applicable methods and techniques course (354-59); successful completion of the practium experience; and approved contract for the intership experience; consent of the director of undergraduate teacher education; and passing score on the Illinois subject-area test.
MS_ED 488 Student Teaching - Secondary: Humanities The purposes of the Student Teaching Seminar: Secondary Humanities include coordination of activities relating to student teaching/internship, assistance to students to enrich the experience as much as possible, introduction and/or emphasis of topics pertinent to the success of the experience, facilitation in the development of a professional teacher, and answers to questions, possible solutions to dilemmas, and support to students throughout the quarter.

Teach Ed 359 Methods: Social Science These methods courses analyze the literature and research related to the subject area and teaching methodology.  In addition, they examine the development of learning experiences, methods, and educational techniques appropriate to the middle and high school levels.  Concurrent registration in 341 and 378 or 379 required.
