Biography
Teplin received her PhD from Northwestern University. She has done empirical studies on the criminalization of the mentally ill, epidemiologic characteristics of jail detainees and correlates of violence. Her honors include the Young Scientist Award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (1990), the MERIT Award from the National Institute of Mental Health (1995) and the American Psychological Association's award for "Distinguished Contributions to Research in Public Policy" (1992).Curriculum Vitae

Teplin is currently conducting The Northwestern Juvenile Project, a longitudinal study of a sample of 1,800 youth who previously were subjects in her baseline study of juvenile detainees. She and her staff are examining the changing alcohol, drug and mental health service needs of these high-risk youth; their use of services; and behaviors that put them at increased risk for violence, drug use and HIV/AIDS.Research Interests
