Dagny D. Bloland is a classroom teacher in the Chicago Public Schools. She has taught the English Methods and Foundations in Writing Processes courses at Northwestern since 1999. Previously she taught courses in qualitative research, English methods, and educational foundations at National-Louis University. In addition to teaching eighth grade English at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School in Chicago, she is also the school's curriculum director. She has been a National Board Certified Teacher since 2002 and has been an Illinois Writing Project professional development facilitator.

Foundation of Writing Processes: Secondary Teaching This course will focus on the processes involved in composing in a variety of genres. We will discuss approaches, methods, and organizational formats in high school and middle school writing classrooms. Our goal is to learn to help adolescents write with increasing competence and confidence in response to a variety of writing tasks. The course is designed to help students acquire the competencies described in the new Illinois Standards incorporating the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts Writing Grades 6-12.

Critical Issues in Literacy Using political, psychological, and sociological lenses, this course will deal with the interaction between current theory and practice in literacy education across the curriculum. Issues to be explored in the course will include why we teach literature, how we teach writing, and how language interacts with other literacy strands. The course will focus on classroom implications and applications of these and related issues including the role of literacy in content areas.

Methods & Techniques: English The course introduces teaching and learning strategies that aid course participants in becoming effective educators in the secondary school setting. Emphasizing current research, the course is a comprehensive study of teaching methods in English. Lesson and unit planning and assessment of student learning are elements of the seminar.

Foundations of Writing Processes (Secondary) Cognitive and sociocultural foundations of writing processes and their implications for instruction and assessment.


Methods & Techniques: English Analysis of literature, research, and teaching methodologies related to the content area. Focuses on learning experiences, methods, and educational techniques appropriate for middle and high school students. Concurrent registration in 378 or 379 required.
