Adriana Arellano of Chicago looked into the School of Education and Social Policy (SESP) her freshman year because its Human Development and Psychological Services major was more application-based than her psychology major. She took Childhood and Adolescence and loved it.

Through SESP, Elizabeth Myers says she has become increasingly committed to improving the health and well-being of people around her. Initially the practicum drew her to SESP because it ensured applicable job experience. She is doing her practicum at the Evanston Community Defender’s Office.

A native of Shaker Heights, Ohio, Halle Bauer is studying abroad in South Africa her junior year. She earned a Certificate in Service Learning for her work with a community art center. She says, “I love SESP! We do things differently!”

Learning and Organizational Change
Jessica Garcia
Jessica Garcia of Oak Lawn, Illinois, describes Learning and Organizational Change as “the under-the-radar business major.” A transfer from Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, she likes the opportunities available within a smaller school like SESP, such as more one-on-one time with advisors and smaller classes.

Mollie Sorey
Mollie Sorey loves the small, intimate environment at SESP where everyone knows everyone. She would like for prospective students to know about the Civic Engagement Certificate Program. Sorey, of Tallahassee, Florida, is the drama director at a summer camp for kids with disabilities and wants to teach English in a Chicago public high school after graduation.

Corey Winchester, who sees education as the foundation for a productive society, would like to teach in a large urban area after he graduates. A native of Philadelphia, Corey is studying abroad in London, and he’s active in the SESP student organization Promote 360 that supports minority students.

Erin Bishop
Erin Bishop of Denver likes the practical and interdisciplinary nature of SESP, as well as the caring and knowledgeable advisers. She values the SESP practicum and says, “Compassion for the community is, I think, the core of the SESP curriculum.”

Kristin Leffel of Wilmore, Kentucky, is interested in health policy. She says SESP gives her a framework to act upon the principles she's passionate about. She's doing her practicum at the Center for Young Women's Development.

What Faith McAuliffe of Herndon, Virginia, likes best about SESP is its “sense of purpose” and “wonderful professors.” Here she finds dedicated students who are involved beyond the classroom. McAuliffe, who transferred from Performance Studies, is considering Teach For America or law school after college.
