What Is a Peer Advisor?

Peer advisors provide academic and personal guidance to incoming first-year and transfer students. Each spring quarter, a competitive selection process is held to identify eight students who will work closely with the assistant dean and Student Affairs staff to orient our new students. Over the summer, this cadré of student leaders contacts our incoming first-year and transfer students to prepare them for arrival on campus. During Northwestern's Wildcat Welcome, each peer advisor mentors a small group of new students and provides guidance during the week. This relationship extends throughout the students' first year, especially the fall term.

Become a Peer Advisor!
The Wildcat Welcome peer advisor position is an entry-level leadership role that enhances the new student orientation week in numerous of  ways.  Peer Advisors act as liaisons between Northwestern and new students. Each peer advisor is assigned a group of new students and is responsible for mentoring them in all of their new student needs. During NSW, peer advisors are responsible for helping to make their group's experience an enjoyable, eventful and informative week by participating in NSW events and programs.

To be considered for the peer advisor position, a student must:
  • Plan to be enrolled for the following year (or at least through winter quarter for seniors).
  • Be available for a half-day SESP training in the spring and fall.
  • Be available for training provided by the University in both the spring and fall.
  • Meet all requirements set by the Office of Orientation and Parent Programs
  • Be available to assist with admissions open houses and other recruitment programs.
Students interested in being a peer advisor should contact Marc Skjervem in March.

Why Others Have Become Peer Advisors
"My biggest motivation for wanting to become a peer advisor is remembering how much my advisor helped my transition to NU.  She was great over the summer, always ready to answer any questions or concerns of mine, and during New Student Week she truly made me feel welcome. I am excited about the opportunity to ease the transition for other incoming SESP freshmen as well."

"I have an absolutely incredible peer advisor without whom I would have never survived the transition to NU, and I want other students to have the same support I’ve gotten. I love meeting new people and I love SESP, and being a peer advisor means that I can welcome new student into my SESP community and show them how to take advantage of the opportunities they have available to them.   am also involved in a variety of activities on campus and could help connect new students with their interests".

"I really enjoy being able to help the new freshmen with all of their questions, calm their worries, and most importantly, welcome them to the best school at NU.  I like being able to share my knowledge and passion for SESP. I have had such a great experience in the school and I’m so happy to be able to tell the new students all the great parts about being in SESP."

"I'm enthusiastic about SESP and my experiences at this university and I want to help welcome the new class!"

    Josh Kaplan
Learning and Organizational Change
Class of 2010

jkaplan@northwestern.edu,  AIM: Wazzzup252

Hey, all! My name is Josh Kaplan, and I'm a Learning and Organizational Change major with a minor in Business Institutions Program (BIP) going into my junior year in SESP. You've all made a great decision choosing Northwestern and I'm pretty much here to help make your freshman year as fun and easy-going as possible. To give you all a little background on myself, I am from the illustrious and always sunny city of San Francisco, California. On campus I am very involved in my fraternity, work as a marketing assistant for the Northwestern girls volleyball team and undergraduate research. I am in the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society (although I don't really know what we do, I've just always wanted to have a chance to put that down on paper) and play in as many intramural sports leagues as I can. I had a pretty amazing freshman year and will do whatever I can so you can have the same great experience. If you need any advice on classes, social life, things to do on and off campus, or most importantly how to survive the Chicago winter if you come from a state with normal weather, I am here to help. Have a fantastic summer – the true fun has yet to start!

  Laura Rogers
Social Policy Class of 2009

LauraRogers2009@u.northwestern.edu,  201/406-9687

Hey, everyone!! My name is Laura Rogers and I will be a senior this year in SESP. I am majoring in Social Policy and will be finishing my minor in Business Institutions this winter. I am so excited that all of you will be here at Northwestern this fall! You will have such a great time, and although things might seem stressful at times you will figure everything out. Over your four years here, you will figure out who you are. It's true – they tell you that's going to happen… "College is about finding yourself…yadayada…," but, in all reality – that's really what it is all about. There are so many opportunities here for you to take part in – whatever your interests may be and even if they change. This coming year I will be involved in Dance Marathon, site leading for NCDC's Centro Romero Adults program, where we help Spanish-speaking immigrants learn English and prepare for the U.S. Citizenship exam, and finishing my certificate in the Undergraduate Leadership Program (most people just call it ULP). I am always here for you with any questions you may have or just for random advice about what sandwiches to order at Norris :) I am so excited to meet all of you! :)

  Stephanie Hatfield
Secondary Education
Welcome to SESP! My name is Stephanie Hatfield, and I am a Secondary Education (English) major with a possible minor in history going into my junior year (wow, time flies... believe me). I'm from Green Bay, Wisconsin, and am a cheesehead through and through (RIP Brett Favre). In my past two years here I've been a team leader for Dance Marathon, spent two years in the Marching Band, been the fundraising chair for SAI (the women's music fraternity on campus) and sung in an a cappella group! I love kids and also babysit and work at an after school reading center for kids. Life at Northwestern is great, and if you couldn't tell, there are SO many amazing opportunities for you. I LOVE discussing them all, so feel free to e-mail me over the summer with any questions or concerns you may have. Get ready for the best four years of your lives so far!!! GO, 'CATS!

Hey, guys! I'm Scott Belsky, and I'm a sophomore Social Policy major in SESP. First of all, good choice — SESP and Northwestern are awesome, and I guarantee you will love them! Don't worry about getting overwhelmed — freshman year is awesome and it's a great time to get involved. Now, to give you a little more info about who I am and what I do, I'm from a small town in northern New Jersey, and here at Northwestern I'm a senator in ASG, and I'm involved in Greek life and in the Political Union. On the side, I love Chicago, especially going to Cubs and Blackhawks games, and IM sports. If you're looking for any advice (or want in on my IM teams), please feel free to contact me. Freshman year really treated me well, and I'd love to give you guys any advice you might desire to make yours just as memorable. Have fun this summer, and I'll see you soon!

My name is Sarah Thomas and I am a Human Development and Psychological Services major in SESP. Just wait. I can’t wait to meet you all in the fall. In the meantime, enjoy the summer and get excited!

jenniferh.lien@u.northwestern.edu AIM: jgotsmiles

YAY for new SESP students!! My name is Jennifer Lien (Jenn with two n's) and I'm a sophomore in Learning and Organizational Change with a minor in Global Health :). I'm so excited to welcome you to the happy SESP family. College might seem a bit scary and overwhelming, but I'm here to help you make the absolute BEST of your years as at Northwestern Wildcat. I hail from the great land of Cincinnati, Ohio. The best thing about Northwestern is that you can get involved with so many things that are each unique and fun — I'm on the Northwestern crew team, I'm working on a documentary called The Throwaway War, I help plan a 5K in Chicago for Footsteps in Hope, and I'm one of the social chairs of my dorm. If you have any questions about classes, majors, the coooold winters in Chicago, clubs or anything, let me know! I can't wait to meet the future of SESP :)!!

Secondary Education, Class of 2011

l-caldwell@northwestern.edu AIM: curlielox1188

Hello, all of you incoming SESP students! I hope you are excited because you are in for the ride of a lifetime in SESP! My name is Lauren Caldwell, and I am going to be a sophomore at Northwestern. My major is secondary education with a focus in mathematics. I am absolutely in love with SESP. In addition to obsessing over the School of Education, I enjoy tutoring around campus with various groups as well as in Evanston. I am looking forward to being a facilitator next year for the Gateway Science Workshops, which you should all take part in if you are planning on taking any math or science classes your freshman year. I love almost every sport, especially soccer, and played on a couple of IM teams this past year. I hail from good ole Memphis, Tennessee, but this summer I have been teaching trigonometry to high schoolers in Long Island. I hate cold weather (hmm, guess you are probably wondering why I chose Northwestern...) and I love being outdoors. I am so excited to meet all of you very soon and hope you are getting totally pumped up for the best year of your life! See you all in September:)

Hey, guys! I'm Danny, a Learning and Organizational Change senior with a minor in Film & Media Studies. I'm originally from Long Island, New York, and am working in New York City this summer, but Northwestern is my favorite place to be by far and I can't wait to get back in September. I swear I am trying to make this sound as non-lame is possible and I'm doing a terrible job, so please bear with me. On campus I'm actively involved in my fraternity, as well as with DM and A&O (and if you don't know what those acronyms stand for, that's what orientation week is for!). I'm pretty much here to help make the transition to Northwestern as fun and easy as possible, so feel free to use me as a resource all summer and throughout the rest of the year with any questions you might have. Have awesome summers, and I can't wait to meet you all in the fall!

I love playing sports, kids, hanging out, salsa dancing in the city and pretty much anything having to do with dance. I am currently working at a summer sleepaway camp in Massachusetts, with limited means to connect myself to the rest of the world, but feel free to e-mail me or call me whenever and I will get back to you as soon as possible. VeronicaMorales2011@u.northwestern.edu AIM: verochick31

Hey, everyone!! My name is Veronica Morales and I’m double majoring in Social Policy and American Studies. Going into my sophomore year in SESP, I know that Northwestern was a great choice. This past year was memorable to me in all the opportunities that Northwestern has to offer for incoming freshmen. If there any question during your career here at Northwestern and especially during freshman year, you can count on me as a resource. A little personal background about myself: I come from a suburb of Chicago called Cicero, Illinois. Here at Northwestern, I am devoted to Alianza the Latino organization on campus and I am dedicated to undergraduate research. Moreover, I have participated in the Chicago Field Studies program here at Northwestern that provides for you hands-on experience in communities outside Northwestern. I received the opportunity to intern for UNITE HERE, one of the largest labor unions in the country. I had a diverse and active freshman year here at Northwestern and will do everything so you can have the great experience as well. If you want advice on social life, classes, professors, departments, on and off campus activities and of course Chicago winters, let me know and I am delighted to help. I hope you have an amazing summer and will be ready for all the fantastic activities that Northwestern has to offer!!!
