Getting insights into academia’s communication style

"Attending the AEA conference was a valuable experience. I learned how scholars present their research, their fields of study, and the latest econometrics techniques they use. It gave me insights into academia's communication style, and I even met some professors again during later job interviews"
Kai Zhang

Northwestern campus life is the most fantastic chocolate of my life

“Every day in Northwestern, walking under the lake breeze, passing through the sunlight and the beach, chatting with dear friends about dreams and exploring the unknown with lovely professors. As Forrest Gump said, ‘Life is a box of chocolates. You never know what you are gonna get.’ But for me, I think I have chosen the most fantastic one"
Tianxing Wang

Navigating through different career paths with the help of workshops

“As a student, one needs to figure out so many things regarding academic tools and the job markets. Different workshops organized by the MSSEP program helped us navigate this process to a great extent. For example, the Northwestern Career Advancement workshop was truly an eye-opening experience. We learned many important things about the US job market and ideal practices while applying for jobs”
Kristina Kokoneci

Connecting beyond the classroom setting

“Our program retreat allowed us to connect beyond the classroom setting. The best moments were undoubtedly when we gathered around a table and shared our experiences so far and our future career plans. And of course, roasting marshmallows with Michelle was a definite highlight. She not only made us feel at home but also fostered a sense of being part of a big, extended family"

Many Universities and public, as well as private institutions, have various Research assistant positions available for a short period of time (1-2 years). RA positions give you an opportunity to work with senior researchers and gain experience in research. RA positions are also a great option for those who are on the fence about a career in research or are sure about having a career in research but find it difficult to decide their field of interest. These are some institutes with RA opportunities:

National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER)

On their website, NBER publishes its own RA positions as well as a list of RA positions outside of NBER

PREDOC

(Pathways to Research and Doctoral Careers) is a premier hub to find full-time, paid, post-bachelor research assistantships at universities and research institutions around the country.

American Institutes for Research

AIR also posts about the research assistant positions on its 'Jobs posting' page.

Tobin Center for Economic Policy (Yale University)

The Tobin Center / Economics Pre-Doctoral Fellows Program at Yale University supports policy-relevant economics research by providing a high-quality education and training experience for individuals with bachelor's or master's degrees who are considering pursuing a Ph.D. in economics or a closely related discipline.

Pre-doctoral fellows work for one to two years as full-time research assistants for one or more faculty mentors and engage in additional education and training activities, including taking credit or auditing one course per semester, participating in a weekly professional development seminar, and attending department research seminars.

Apart from this, you can also approach a professor/scholar expressing your interest in R.A. ship.

Many institutes have internship programs for ECON and social policy students. Typically, these programs are 10-12 weeks long and follow the university quarter system. The application process for any internship program typically begins 4-5 months before the start date of the internship. Here are a few institutes that offer an internship program.

International Economic Development Council (IEDC)

IEDC has Economic Development Technical Internship and Public Policy Internship. Besides these internships, IEDC has a "Young Professional Mentorship program" worth checking.

Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)

OECD is a Paris-based organization with offices in the USA, Germany, Japan, and Mexico. Students looking for international internship opportunities should check out their internship program.

MDRC (Manpower Demonstration Research Corporation)

MDRC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan education and social policy research organization based in New York City, Washington DC, Oakland, and Los Angeles, California. MDRC offers a paid internship program for Undergraduate, Master's, and doctoral fellows. The internship is based in the NYC office.

World Bank Internship Program

International Monetary Fund (IMG) Internship Program

IMF recruits for the Fund Internship Program (FIP) globally, with approximately 50 students from around the world joining each year at IMF headquarters in Washington, D.C. These paid internships take place between June and October and run for 10 to 12 weeks.

American Institutes for Research (AIR) Internship

AIR's Summer Internship Program is a 10–12 week paid summer program for bachelor's, master's, and doctoral students. Apart from this, AIR also keeps posting about other internship opportunities with them.

United Nations (U.N.) Internship Program

Evanston

Evanston is a beautiful, calm, and peaceful town on Lake Michigan's north shore. It borders Chicago to the south, Skokie to the west, Wilmette to the north, and Lake Michigan to the east. Founded by Methodist Business leaders in 1857, Evanston is home to Northwestern University. The city and the University share a long-standing relationship. Northwestern University was founded before the town itself. In 1855, Northwestern opened its doors for the first time. The founders of Northwestern submitted to the county judge their plans for a city and their wish to rename the town Evanston in 1854. In 1857, the city of Evanston was named. Due to its geographical closeness with Chicago and yet suburban nature, Evanston perfectly balances the fast-paced city life and the calm suburban life. This town's unique beauty and character delight visitors and residents of all ages.
