Graduate Assistant Spotlight: Rebecca Andrews

Graduate Assistant Spotlight: Rebecca Andrews

By Rebecca Andrews

I’m a pre-service teacher and new Graduate Assistant in the MSEd program. I’m studying to teach secondary history, and pursuing an additional endorsement in high school English. Before beginning the program in fall 2020, I received a bachelor’s degree in history from Brown University and worked as a litigation paralegal.

I loved studying history, which inspired me to become a teacher. In college, I was interested in all different subjects, and chose history because I could take courses on everything from capitalism to psychiatry to the Aztec empire. I especially wanted to learn about those left out of the textbooks, and concentrated on women’s and gender history. My teachers opened the world for me, encouraging me to look closely, to seek new perspectives, and to develop my own ideas. I hope to do the same for my own students.

When I’m not studying, I love reading and writing, making art, cooking, and accumulating plants. You can usually find me browsing used bookstores, down by Lake Michigan, or exploring different Chicago neighborhoods. Though I’m beginning the program remotely, I still want to get to know everyone, so please say hello
