Designing School Systems to Support Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)

Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy has an open position for a Postdoctoral Fellow, starting Fall 2018 or Winter 2019. We seek a postdoctoral fellow to work on a new study, funded by the National Science Foundation, that will examine schools and school systems’ efforts to design educational infrastructures that bridge from the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to high quality elementary school science instruction.  The proposed project involves a longitudinal theory-building program of research using an embedded, comparative case study design to describe efforts of bridging from the NGSS to classroom instruction in a diverse sample of states, school systems, and elementary schools. The study involves an interdisciplinary team of scholars in science education, education policy, and the organization of schools and school systems. 

 We seek an experienced researcher with a strong background in qualitative field methods including interviewing, observation, and document analysis; quantitative research skills would be an added bonus. We also seek a researcher with substantive expertise in areas such as science education, instructional reform, school and school system organization, organizational theory, or policy implementation.

 The postdoctoral fellow will have an opportunity to take a leadership role in the work and to participate in all phases of the project, including: sampling; developing instruments; data collection; data analysis; and the publication of results. There will be opportunities for the successful postdoctoral scholar to develop publications that build on her/his emerging research agenda. The postdoctoral scholar must be able and willing to relocate to the Chicago area; travel to research sites; work both individually and as part of a multi-campus team; and provide supervision to undergraduate research assistants.

 QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants should have an earned doctorate in education, sociology, political science, psychology, public policy, human development, anthropology, or related field. The position carries a competitive salary plus health insurance coverage and has the possibility of renewal, conditional upon performance and available funding.
