Senior Research Administrator (NEERA)

The School of Education and Social Policy (SESP) seeks a Research Manager to work with its team of researchers, data analysts, and partnership coordinators and local school district leaders and practitioners to support the Northwestern-Evanston Education Research Alliance (NEERA). NEERA is a research-practice partnership (RPP) that partners Northwestern University with both Evanston, IL schools districts 65 and 202. NEERA collaboratively leverages the expertise of researchers and practitioners in and out of school to promote the learning and development of the young people of Evanston and the world beyond. The Research Manager, a full-time PhD-level position, will work in direct collaboration with the OCEP Faculty Director and Assistant Dean for Community Education Partnerships to help further build and directly support NEERA, building collaborative research projects and forging partnerships between researchers, the school districts, and community partners. We see the Research Manager as a new resource to help further strengthen the impact of NEERA. 

This role will help to establish new and further cultivate existing connections between researchers who are working on district-supported research projects and practitioners in schools and community-based organizations. The Research Manager will support district staff and school-based teams and community partners in sensemaking of research findings and translating findings into practical improvements. In working closely with district and school staff and community educators on how research impacts problems of practice, this role will also help to broker information and insights to Northwestern research teams. This work will further strengthen researcher capacity for applied work and in turn help to accelerate and transform current and future research studies. The Research Manager will also work with the Faculty Director and Assistant Dean to expand NEERA to include community-based organizations and work on translating and communicating NEERA’s work to researcher, practitioner, community, and other stakeholder audiences. The Research Manager will be a member of the NEERA workgroup that includes Northwestern researchers and staff and practitioners from all partners and report directly to the Assistant Dean for Community Education Partnerships.

Specific Responsibilities:

Duties:

  • Works in partnership with a team of data analysts, district partnership coordinators, research assistants, the Assistant Dean for Community Education Partnerships and Faculty Director of the Office of Community Education Partnerships to execute on RPP vision and strategy in partnership with school district leaders.
  • Assist with grants development, management and implementation, and reporting on NEERA’s RPP research projects. This work includes:
    • Helping to manage day-to-day operational and tactical aspects of research projects, may delegate to or coordinate duties with research staff.
    • Helping to develop and manage research project activity timelines, budgets, and tracking documents for project management of research studies, progress, and logistics.
    • Helping to design and manage research studies, including the development of protocols, informed consent forms, and data collection tools, and assist with institutional research review processes.
    • Conducting data analysis and drafting study reports, manuscripts, presentations, publications, and other needed documents in collaboration with researchers, data analysts, and practitioners.
  • Support scholars and fellows working on NEERA projects.
  • Help to plan seminars, workshops, and events that advance NEERA and RPP work across partners and provide additional learning and professional development for researchers, students, practitioners, and the community stakeholders.
  • Translate research and practice projects for diverse stakeholders to ensure and advance their impact on scholarship, policy and practice and community benefit.
  • Help to communicate NEERA and the value of its work and RPP work broadly.
  • Conduct literature reviews to identify research and emerging data relevant to RPP work.
  • Attend professional conferences and engage in ongoing learning on RPPs and community-engaged scholarship.

Complexity

  • Typically administers multiple research projects such as:
    • Complex multi-PI or multi-unit proposals, grants &/or contracts
    • Research portfolio for a more complex small to mid-sized unit
    • Federal and private foundation grants approximately $500K+/year over multiple years
    • Program grants
    • Grant agreements and contracts

Pre-Award

  • Assists with/Manages pre-award administration of grants and &/or contracts.
  • May coordinate proposal submission.
  • May coordinate budget and justification preparation.
  • May complete sponsor and university proposal forms.
  • Helps to coordinate IRB and assists with development and management of co-investigator and partner agreements.
  • Creatively and proactively evaluates and resolves problems and makes decisions.

Post-Award

  • Helps to manage and coordinate post-award activities.
  • Helps to prepare interim and final program reports.

Financial

  • Provides information to senior management that is used for department budgeting purposes.

Human Resources

  • Develops staff.
  • Mentors other administrative staff in research administration.

Compliance

  • Ensures compliance with all appropriate NU policies & practices; local, state, federal, agency & sponsor rules, regulations & requirements regarding grant &/or contract administration.
  • Recommends changes to improve programs, policy &/or practice. 
  • Resolves compliance problems & issues working in conjunction with faculty.
  • Be up to date on FERPA, SOPPA and other regulations/policies – help to communicate to internal and external partners.

Supervision

  • May provides direct supervision to research support staff. 
  • Assigns & reviews staff work.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to graduate and post-doctoral students engaged in RPP and community work.

Miscellaneous

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
