Cynthia Coburn Delivers Keynote Speech in Ireland

Cynthia Coburn at BERA

Professor Cynthia Coburn delivered a keynote address at the British Educational Research Association’s annual conference in Ireland recently. She addressed an international audience of education scholars and researchers on "Pathways from Research to Policy: Implications for Researchers."

The British Educational Research Association (BERA) is a nonprofit organization devoted to encouraging educational research and its application for the improvement of practice and public benefit. Its members are from the United Kingdom and beyond.

In 2015 the BERA conference in Belfast focused on the relationship between research, practice and policy, which is the area of Coburn’s expertise. Coburn gave her keynote on September 17.

A professor at Northwestern’s School of Education and Social Policy, Coburn studies the relationship between instructional policy and teachers' classroom practices in urban schools.

To date, she has investigated this issue in a series of studies that tackle critical issues facing public schools: the relationship between reading policy and teachers' classroom practice, the scale-up of innovative mathematics curricula, data use at the district level, and the relationship between research and practice for school improvement.

Global initiatives are a priority for the School of Education and Social Policy to extend its resources internationally and address critical issues around the world. With an eye toward developing its global perspective, SESP has recently instituted an Office of Global Initiatives.
