Certificate of Advanced Study in Teacher Leadership

certificate student

Credit-bearing courses can be taken individually; a strand of four or more courses is necessary to receive a Certificate of Advanced Study from Northwestern University. Participants earn a physical certificate and the credential is acknowledged on an official Northwestern transcript. Teachers must apply to the program as a non-matriculated student to receive a graduate credit on a transcript for either a single course or a Certificate of Advanced Study.

Certificate of Advanced Study: Instructional Coaching

Instructional Coaching is one of the fastest growing roles for Teacher Leaders. As a coach, teachers work with a colleague to help that person achieve their goals and improve their teaching practice. In this way, professional learning is embedded in the classroom and day-to-day experience of a teacher. Teachers who serve as coaches must have a deep understanding of adult learning theory, coaching protocols, good instruction, how to build relationships, and the connection between coaching, mentoring, and evaluation.

The Northwestern Certificate of Advanced Study: Instructional Coaching provides the background necessary to become a successful Instructional Coach through four online, graduate level courses:

  • Teacher Thinking and Learning
  • Foundations of Instructional Coaching
  • Mentoring and Evaluating Teachers
  • Leading Professional Learning
