How much does the program cost?
The tuition rate beginning Fall 2008 for the 2008-2009 academic year will be $2,530 per course. This comes to $37,950 for 15 graduate courses. This total does not include such other expenses as books or housing. This also does not include tuition for deficiency courses (for those wishing to become certified), which may or may not be billed at this rate as well (depending on what types of classes they are). You would never be billed for a class at more than the current MSEd tuition rate for a deficiency course.
Why is tuition so high?
We have what we believe is a very strong program backed by a historically strong academic reputation. Northwestern is a private University, and tuition rates for a private institution will generally be higher than for a public one.
What kind of financial assistance does the MSEd program offer?
Like most professional programs (that are not oriented toward training students for a research career), the MSEd program offers only a few partial scholarships. If you are interested in these partial scholarships, you will need to indicate that on the appropriate spot on your application and apply by the January 7 preceding the quarter you would like to enter. The time to apply for these is as early as possible.
There are three to six graduate assistant positions, which should also be applied for by January 7. These positions typically begin at the start of the fall quarter. If a student enters our program before the fall quarter, these positions can also begin as early as the summer quarter.
Most of our matriculated students who need aid take out low interest federal and institutional loans. Non-matriculated students are generally not eligible for federal and institutional loan aid until they are accepted as matriculated students. However, they may be eligible for alternative low interest educational loan programs. Eligibility for these loans may be determined once an applicant has been accepted as a non-matriculated student. Please refer to the Master of Science in Education Program Guide to Financial Aid Brochure, page 2, for financial aid information for non-matriculated students.
Can you send me information about other forms of financial aid (student loans)?
You may refer to the Master of Science in Education Program Guide to Financial Aid Brochure, which lists the steps one should take to apply for financial aid. This brochure will include the steps you should take before and while you are applying to the MSEd program, as well as the website addresses for downloading financial aid forms once you have been accepted into the MSEd program.
Student Financial Services manages MSEd students' financial aid packages. The best way to contact Student Financial Services with specific questions is by e-mail at gradfinaid@northwestern.edu.
Please note: All students seeking student loans must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid Form (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.org before contacting the Student Financial Services Office. In general, (but not in all cases) students are eligible for student loans in the amount of the full cost of tuition and living expenses.

Are there any tuition payment plans?
Not in the sense that you can distribute payments over time. Most students finance their tuition using low-interest, federal student loans. All questions regarding tuition payments may be directed to Student Accounts at 847/491-5224.
May I have an application fee waiver form?
Please submit a letter requesting that the fee be waived with an explanation.
How can I earn free room and board by working and living on campus?
