School of Education & Social Policy

Curriculum

The curriculum of the Teacher Leadership concentration is designed to enhance teachers' professional skill set and enable them to become leaders in the field of education.

Hallmarks of the Program

Rich Theoretical Framework

Students study pedagogical methods, childhood development and philosophies of education and develop a deep understanding of how theoretical models are utilized in practice.

Collaborative and Practical Learning

Throughout the curriculum students are placed in small groups to allow for discussion of texts and real issues they encounter in the classroom at their practicum and student teaching sites, making the time in class dynamic and engaging.

Personal and Reflective Focus

Teacher candidates articulate and refine a personal philosophy of education. Students also consider the roles schools, family and social contexts on student learning and question how their own backgrounds impact their beliefs about teaching and learning.

Immersion in Inquiry

Though the Master's Project and other course work, students gain the skills to systematically analyze problems they encounter and become able to continuously improve their practice through inquiry and reflection.

Students must complete 15 graduate courses to earn the master's degree. Students also have the option to pursue a certificate. Most Teacher Leadership students take courses on a part-time basis while teaching full-time. Most classes meet in the evenings.
