Hi everyone, my name is Carla Cuba (she/her) and I am in my first quarter as a pre-service teacher and graduate assistant in the MSEd Program! I was originally born in Peru and moved to the United States when I was five. I am currently studying to teach secondary history and get an endorsement in political science as well. Prior to attending Northwestern, I received my bachelor’s degree in history from North Park University.

What brought me to where I am today was a series of trial and error. After finishing my bachelor’s degree, I had my sights set on law school after taking a gap year. During that time, I studied to take the LSAT and was eventually admitted to law school. When I began, I found  myself struggling on how I envisioned my life. I was always curious about a career in teaching, and I reluctantly took a leap of faith and withdrew from law school to take time to reflect on my life goals. During this time, I found a job at my local high school as a tutor in a program called AVID. This job exposed me to working with high school students in a college readiness program that gave them tools and resources to succeed. During my time collaborating with students, I found my passion was to teach future generations of learners and to build strong and meaningful relationships. Not only did I spend my time teaching them, my students also taught me a lot along the way.

During my free time, I enjoy running and cozying up with a really good book! I also love to spend time with my family and friends. I’m always looking to try new foods and restaurants, so if anyone has any recommendations, let me know!
