Graduate Assistant Spotlight: Marissa Moss
Hi there! I’m Marissa Moss (she/her). I just finished my first quarter as a pre-service teacher and graduate assistant in the MSEd program. I’m studying to teach secondary social studies and history. Prior to attending Northwestern, I worked as a teaching assistant for preschoolers and adult learners in Chicago. I received my bachelor’s degree in history from Indiana University Bloomington in 2019.
To be honest, I did not enjoy history in school much until I went to college. During undergrad, I studied African American history and women’s history which opened my eyes to the many crucial narratives that were left out of my classrooms. I had wonderful professors who modeled the kind of thinking and learning I want to share with younger students. I hope to center my students’ interests and identities as much as possible in the classroom; I know how powerful it is to identify with the material you are learning in civics and history. My own experiences as a student made me passionate about transformative social studies education – I believe the classroom can be a space where we reflect on and build the world we want to see.
Outside of Northwestern, I’m usually spending time with my family, friends, and my dog, Dizzy. I love live music, spicy food, and being in the sun. I look forward to connecting with everyone in the MSEd program!
