Student Spotlight: Katherine Miles
Why did you want to be a teacher or be involved in education?
There is nothing more rewarding than watching a child find confidence in the things they enjoy, find interest in, and excel at. I am also a coach, so I view teaching as a synonym for coaching. My goal as a coach is to make YOU a better and smarter student of the game. Therefore my goal as a teacher is to make you a better and smarter student in the classroom.
Why did you choose Northwestern University’s MSEd Program?
Northwestern has always been my dream school. It has one of the best education programs in the nation, its close to home and offers so many wonderful opportunities.
What were you doing prior to starting at Northwestern?
I was a political fundraiser for 36th Ward Alderman Gilbert Villegas of Chicago.
What are your career goals?
I'd eventually like to run for office. I am excited to teach and coach, but then I want to take everything I learn in my classroom to our government to advocate for our students and teachers.
Was there a particular teacher or teacher leader who inspired you in school?
My sophomore high school chemistry teacher, Mrs. O'Halloran. She brought the energy every single day. Chemistry was the class I feared the most; but she made it the best class I EVER took in high school, college, or grad school.
Are you involved in any extracurricular activities outside of Northwestern?
Yes, I am a basketball and volleyball coach. I am also the events director for the Young Democrats of Illinois.
