Student Spotlight: Michelle Ryoo
Hi, everyone! My name is Michelle Ryoo, and I am currently in my second year in the MSEd program with a concentration in secondary biology. Before I started the program in Fall 2019, I graduated from Korea National University of Education with a bachelor's degree in biology education.
I was born in New Jersey, and most of my education is based in South Korea. The experiences of education in both countries made me think about the impact of teachers on young minds. I learned that a good educator can enrich students' lives in various ways. Even though I was not good at biology in high school, my biology teacher believed that I had the capacity to grow and pushed me further. I was fascinated by the power a good teacher carries to inspire students to find their true potential.
One continuing struggle from the beginning of the program has been learning to step away from the way I was taught. However, with the guidance of great teachers and supportive friends from the MSEd program, I am learning how to better myself as a preservice teacher and internalize new ways to teach effectively.
As a strong advocate of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), I am currently interested in the development of equitable curriculum and high-quality materials for science education. I am confident to say that Northwestern's MSEd program has opened a lot of doors to an exciting future, and I hope you can join the journey!
