Summer Grant Winners Announced

Julia Lowenthal was one of three SESP undergrads to recieve a summer internship grant.

Three School of Education and Social Policy undergraduates received grants from The Alumnae of Northwestern University to complete 2020 summer internships, an especially noteworthy experience in the midst of a global pandemic.

The Summer Internship Grant Program (SIGP) provides 20 undergraduate students a $3,000 stipend for completing an unpaid summer internship, while simultaneously participating in a professional development program offered by Northwestern Career Advancement (NCA).

The Alumnae of Northwestern University, an all-volunteer organization of women, raises funds for a wide range of projects to benefit the University and showcases the University’s academic resources with the community through its Continuing Education program. ( www.nualumnae.org).

SESP grant recipients were:

  • Julia Lowenthal, from Rockville, Md., is a junior studying social policy and global health studies. She is working as a protection order intern at Ascend Justice, a domestic violence legal clinic, where she helps survivors file protection orders and assists with additional casework.
  • Ryan Millman, from Vernon Hills, Ill., is a junior studying human development and psychology and psychological services and psychology. His internship is with the School of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences (FSM) in the Pediatric Assessment Laboratory.
  • Ruby Scanlon, from Los Angeles, Calif., is a sophomore studying social policy, political science, journalism and international studies. She will be interning for the Bureau of Legislative Affairs at the Department of State.
